The Sexual Life Of The Savages - Underground Post Punk From Sao Paulo, Brasil (Soul Jazz Records)
Rock / Metal Vintage / Reissues
This compilation traces the evolution of a set of Brasilian post-punk bands that were heavily inspired by the downtown 'no-wave' scene in NYC of the early 80s - citing bands like ESG, Liquid Liquid, Arto Lindsay (himself a Brazilian), DNA and James White And The Contortions as direct influences. Alongside these US acts, these Brazilian bands also quote the UK post-punk movement as being heavily instrumental - you can hear effect that Joy Division, The Pop Group and Gang Of Four clearly had on this music! 'The Sexual Life Of The Savages' relates to the complicated relationship Brazilian musicians have with the music of the US and their ironic perception of how Brazilian music is seen outside the country. The album comes with sleeve-notes and exclusive photographs that catalogue this underground Brazilian music scene.
