Not too many labels manage to release two outstanding albums that mess with their own genres definitions and the possibilities of music itself in one year, but remarkably Hyperdub follows up the rather excellent Burial album with this incredible and immensely entriguing album from Kode 9 and the Spaceape.
It became clear sometime this year that Kode9 was all bassed out from Dubstep's slow darkness, and in turn he's reacted by creating an album that could have reflected some of the Catatonia of his early singles, but is remarkably light upbeat and melodic in places, whilst in others, like on the spooked out Prince cover ' Sign of the dub' almost unbearably heavy.
The Spaceape is also very listenable, varying his voice and his subjects but coming back to the same science fiction themes, hostile aliens and audio viruses, which give the album a strange set of meanings that are just beyond simple understanding, ready for the listener to unpick and understand in their own terms.
Altogether the album is a brilliant futuristic sounding album sounds out it's come out of alot of hard work and conceptualising, it's a real work of art rather than a set of tracks and again for Hyperdub it's bound to be one of the albums of the year for alot of people. Incredible!
