Jim (Warp)
Rock / Metal Soul / Funk
Jamie Lidell's a strange guy, incredibly creative, he's always run an almost schizophrenic line between showman, soul man and avant guard electronic experimenter.
Perhaps it was always inevitable that at some point, he'd take one side and produce a proper soul album, the sum parts of his vocal influences, so here it is, a fearlessly old fashioned heart warming soul album, honest brave and rather lovely.
The album is beautifully produced by Beck producer Justin Stanley, along with Gonzales and Jamie himself, featuring his collaborator Mocky, Gonzales and a full band.
'Jim', like it's predecessor 'Multiply' is immediate and brimming with sunshine, featuring some gorgeous ballads like ' All I wanna do' and ' Rope of Sand', almost Hendrix-like rockers like 'Hurricane' and sweet soul moments.
It's an old fashioned sound, but like 'Multiply' again, Jamie's background in dance music means that repeated listens reveal the shiny modern surface behind the retro stylings.
